Well I am a little bit nervous right now. This morning I did a photo shoot with Babiche from Viva Magazine (an insert in Wednesday’s NZ Herald). They are featuring me in their “10 Favourite Things” section in the 7th July issue.
I was thinking about ways to get some publicity for my upcoming show on the 10th July, and instead of doing more advertising and flyer drops, I thought it would be a good idea to do a story. Not necessarily one about my art, but something about me, something personal – but with a little write-up about the show though to get people along to view the art.
A while back I was talking to Evan Woodruffe about the photo shoot Viva did at his studio. Although he was not featured as part of the article (it was a fashion shoot), he said he received a lot of publicity from just having his name mentioned.
I am an avid reader of Viva. It’s my Wednesday morning ritual. I especially love reading the 10 Favourite Things section as they always have really interesting people featured. I thought “I could do this, I have 10 favourite things that relate to art and design”. AND, Viva is read by about 300,000 people every Wednesday. What better way to get yourself known by many people who don’t know you and may just like your work.
I guess you are wondering how I managed to get myself in Viva magazine. I got a PR person to do the hard work – Anna Martin. I found it a tiny bit wierd calling them up saying something like “Hi, my name is Karley, I am an artist and I would like to be in your 10 Favourite Things section”. It’s much easier to have someone else talk about you and sell you as a person. Anna sent them a Media Kit with information for my up-coming solo show along with a photo of me and some of my work.
Thanks to Amanda Linnell, Zoe Walker and Babiche Martens from Viva for all of their support. And a huge thank you to Anna Martin for making this happen, you’re awesome.
