Sorry for not keeping in touch for a while. I decided to take some time off after my exhibition in July and recharge my batteries and take some time to think about what I wanted to do or achieve in the next 12-18 months in terms of my art. So here I am sitting in a beautiful bach in Matakana, it’s an overcast Sunday morning looking at bunnies playing outside in the vines and magnificent views of the country side.
I have decided that 2011 will be a year of entering competitions and preparing for my second solo show in 2012. I have always said to myself that I will enter all these competitions, but then you never get around to it because you are busy doing other stuff for shows. Entering competitions is a great way to get your name out there in the art world, it’s not just about showing your work in shows (group or solo). Even just being a finalist in a competition is a great look for your CV. I’ll post a list of competitions on another blog as you may be interested in entering these yourself. There are some great opportunities out there, in NZ and overseas.
I am also exploring new ways to make my paintings and my taxidermy work together. As you will already know I love colour and the meaning of the colours I use in each piece is really important. What I mean by that is colour has the power to evoke different types of emotions or reactions, so I try to portray that in my work. I have started to bring colour into my taxidermy pieces now too and I am loving the outcome.
I am looking for people to be part of my second solo show, kind of like what I did with Interviews with Escapists, however this time I will not be creating a painting about one particular person. Instead, I will gather all of the answers from the interviews and find common themes and also not so common themes and create an overall story with my works. I think I want to call it ‘Affirming Life’. I will be exploring the life affirming aspects to escapism…more details to follow soon.
